What can be done in this situation? Regarding Joint Enlisted Person of the Year Board.

My command put out a policy this year to align with our HQs unit concerning Enlisted Person of the Quarter and Enlisted Person of the Year boards within our command. This policy states that only the winners of the Enlisted Person of the Quarter Board for the year are eligible to compete for Enlisted Person of the Year. My command conducted the Enlisted Person of the Year board last week and contradictory to policy allowed anyone who had competed in the quarterly boards to attend.
After they conducted this board, it was mentioned to me that our command's Chief of Staff did not like who the board recommended as the winner(s). So now the command is holding another board for those designated by the chief of staff to attend. At least two of the quarterly board winners will not be attending this 'new' board.
It shocks me that the senior enlisted are willing to compromise the board, and have agreed to go ahead with the wishes of the chief of staff by conducting a new board. What can be done in this situation?

SGT Kristin Wiley, Who "own's" the program? I will say that it is not always an AF requirement to win a quarterly to be eligible to compete for the yearly.

I'm not sure you can do much, SGT Kristin Wiley. Maybe the IG if you feel strongly about it and want to make an issue of it. From your description, the whole deal sounds like a discombobulated mess. Seems straightforward to me ... Soldier of the Month (or Quarter) winners are allowed to compete at the Soldier of the Year board. It was like that when I was competing almost 40 years ago. Can it have changed that much? I doubt it. But, if you do "make a stink," you'll probably make enemies at the same time, so you have to weigh all that in your decision.

Does your Commander (above the Chief of Staff) have an open door policy? You could go that route. Be careful though. Know the politics of it all. If the Commander is "tight" with the Chief of Staff, then an open door visit might not be smart.

He does, and some of the enlisted plan on talking with him, but do not feel like much will get accomplished through that route.

All I can think of, besides the other things you've mentioned, is the NCO chain. Maybe you could appeal to your NCO support chain and see if they are willing to engage on this issue. It's clearly not fair. Good luck to you, SGT Kristin Wiley!

My NCO chain is basically non-existent. I'll try talking to the Army Element at HQ, and see what they advise (outside my unit).
