Does anyone have any advice or tips regarding being stationed in Japan and getting accustomed to the culture?

Don't be "the ugly American"... be polite, be courteous, obey local laws and customs.

Learning the culture is important. You can utilize the resources on base. It's not bad to ask the local nationals you may be working with about do's and don'ts.

If you can accept advice from an Air Force member, here it is: go with an open mind and you'll have the best time ever. I was stationed at both Kadena (Okinawa) and Mainland (Misawa) for 9 years. Immerse in the culture. Learn the language. Participate in the festival events. Travel when you can, engage with Japanese or Okinawans as they prefer. The time goes by quicky and soon you'll seek to extend your tour. My 21 year old daughter, born in Okinawa and traveled world went back at eighteen and has professed staying forever.
