How do promotion points work during a deployment?

I’m a Specialist (P) and I will be deploying soon. My NCO’s and PL want to defer my PME so that I can pick up E5 while downrage but how will that work if perhaps my points are too low? I just need Civilian Ed but obviously that takes time so I was wondering if anyone had any insight.

If I remember correctly from when I last read the message, the exemption only exist when you have sufficient points. It is not an automatic exemption from pme, and it is not for the duration of the deployment.
From what I remember, first you have to make points for that specific month, and then there is a small window of time to allow S1 to request the deferment of pme

Just last year while deployed to AFGH we sent one of our soldiers to BLC in Kuwait. It's not really a big deal anymore.

Points work the same way as when you are CONUS. If you don't have enough points you will not be promoted. There is an ETP to be promoted with out the appropriate NCOPDS, there are caveats though. There is a BLC in Kuwait so you could he sent to that mission dependent.
