Greatgrandpa WWI patch, can you identify?

My Greatgrandpa was in WWI. I sent in a request for is military records, but have run into a wall of inept-civil-servants. I only have one picture of a possible patch. Anyone have any idea? I know he had a horse.

It might have been the 77th Infantry division, also known as the Lost Battalion. Note, most unit patches were hand sewed by the men themselves.

I thought it looked like a liberty torch too. Honestly, I had to give up for the day because it was driving me crazy. I kept thinking I had it and then I kept coming back to the 77th.

Do you know were he was when the picture was taken? As the unit patch is an enigma.

Do you know which service he was in? Both the US Army and USMC fought in Europe in the First World War.
