As the Army is down-sizing and in a recent publication of SFC MOS's being specifically targeted for QSP (i.e. 11B, 19K, etc). What should we be looking for in Senior NCOs to keep? What are the contents of the "cream of the crop"? Taking care of Soldiers is a 'gimme', let's hear what really makes a NCO a good co-worker, leader, peer, and subordinate.

they day a Soldier stops telling you his problems is the day you need to get out of the army. words a CSM once told me. my view, approachable, reasonable, knowledgable, compassionate. these boards never see the face value of anyone. but it isnt like you can host a board for thousands of NCOs to see which you want to promote and which you want to qmp. the board does the best it can. but when every NCOER looks and sounds the same, well, its hard to determine who the best is. the best way to put it... You are Marty (from madagascar). to anyone from the outside looking in, youre just another zebra. you look the same as the next guy. you sound the same too. to those that know you, well, they know how to look at you to see how you are better than the rest. the selection process isnt perfect. heck, i dont like it much at all. but it is the best process we have. hopefully, this new NCOER will make those stellar performers stand out a little better.

its simple really, management by walking around, talk to the soldiers who are in your charge. Train them and teach them by leading by example. If you see something out of place fix it, use everything as a training tool
