What is the difference between reclassing to 18 series (through retention), and putting in a SFAS packet (through a SORB recruiter)?

My reenlistment window is open and i am considering reclassing to 18, but first I’d like to learn what the difference is between reclassing to 18 series and simply putting in a SF packet through a SORB recruiter. It seems both options have the same process and outcome so I don’t understand why there is a reclass option when one can just put in a SFAS packet and still get the same outcome. If I choose to reclass 18 series, does that mean I will get reassigned to SWC in an 18X type of slot where I will go to SOPC then SFAS? I asked my retention about this but he was unable to give me an answer. What is the difference and what are the benefits of choosing the reclass option. Thank you in advance.

I am relatively sure you cannot reclass into 18 series unless the world changed over night. The Q course determines whether or not one gets into the series. Following that there are many more requirements depending upon you specialty within through which one would be qualified or disqualified. The reason the packets are the same is there is only one path. It is an admirable goal and I wish you all the best. Thank you for your service.

I would go the fastest route. Whatever route would get me to SFAS the fastest. I say hey go get your hurt and pain on, then smile

haha yes it is William, yes it is. Mine only survived because I married an Angel who was a Vet. It is a hard life not only on the SM but the entire family.
