In the Marines, we called it getting thrashed, or were told to get into the pit, the Army calls it getting smoked.

What do the USN, USCG, and USAF call it when you discipline the SM with exercise to muscle failure?

What is the PC term...for mandatory corrective PT?

If, as a troop, I did something jacked up (not criminal), I would much rather get my butt handed to me than get it documented.

Show up late-get smoked.
Miss a formation-get smoked
Leave a rifle in a vehicle, that gets recovered by my Sgt-get smoked until he is tired, then get thrashed by his relief.

I would much rather take a lesson in pain than have a permanent paper trail that will affect my career. That is just me.

Just me.

Yeah I don't do corrective training. I'll make the SM write a small essay in APA or Chicago format. It'll benefit them in the future.

SSG Daniel Rosploch There was a regular group of us receiving "extra attention" as we were learning the ways of how things were supposed to be done......and I was in the group (we were all 17-19).

But...I will still say that I would rather get that attention, than have some permanent documentation....

I concur with your assessment 1Sgt. Corrective training is much more effective. It helps to instill discipline and promotes physical readiness.

We are not allowed, it is just not a sensitive punishment. Instead, we have to sit down, hug, sing Kumbaya and hope they change their behavior. When I first came in, I was a young guy and extremely hard-headed. If you want to get someones attention, about an hour of grass drills will definitely do that. It certainly didn't humiliate, since normally all of us were there together. I will never forget one time, I was effing something up, so my Senior Drill made me stand in front of the formation and told me to take my right hand and place it on my right butt cheek and then take my left hand and place it on my left butt cheek. He then told me to start patting my butt to see if I could do that right. Some of the guys laughed and they wound up right next to me. 'Smoking' isn't about humiliating or 'hazing'...it is about changing a behavior. I left basic strong and have always used physical exertion as a stress reducer because of my time in basic and AIT.

Yes and No but I think it depends more on the type of units.

I had Airborne and Ranger led units who tended to smoke on a fairly regular basis. The other units: MI, Signal, CS didn't.

The training, expectations and temperament of the individuals in the unit has a lot to do with it I think. You get a lot of hard charging Airborne and/or Rangers together and the expectations go up. Those guys expect to get smoked if they screw up.

When I was in 10th MTN, people got smoked every single day, a part of Army life. I got to 101st, and it almost never happened there. Both signal units. I think the unit and post culture has a lot to do with it.
