CPT Chris Loomis,

I'm always armed, I try and stay alert to my surroundings, and look for anything that may be out of the norm. If I have reason to believe I may be personally targeted (e.g. someone has made a direct threat), then very routines and mix up travel routes.

Avoidance is key. The best way to stay out of trouble is not put yourself in a place where trouble happens. I also try to blend in to local population as much as possible. Finally, have personal protection. Here in Japan that limits what you can carry, but every little bit helps.

I don't drink. I don't do drugs. Those two things combined with where I live, reduces my chances of being the victim of a violent crime to less than that of getting struck by lightening. On top of that, I do try to maintain a level of situational awareness, and I do keep firearms as well.
