I will be pcs'ing to baumholder Germany next year and i was wondering how housing works for married senior NCOs.....I've been getting conflicting stories from peers, websites, etc and it would be great if someone who is currently stationed or were recently stationed in germany can help me out. Do my family and I get to choose to live off post or do we have to live on post? How are housing on post and off post? Is it by availability of housing or is it by rank?

The Garrisons first priority is to fill on post quarters. This is done by grade. If housing is unavailable they will then place you in Government leases quarters. If all is full you will be assisted in finding off post quarters that meet the Governments standards. You do not get a choice. All quarters are suitable some newer than others. Baumholder has been for the past 12 years upgrading all of their facilities. I am sure you will find them suitable. Thank you for your service.

MSG (Join to see) I just left Germany in September of last year, although I was in Hohenfels. Not 100% sure that it works the same in Baumholder but if it does you've got a few options being a Senior NCO. You can have housing on base, dependent on how much housing they have on base they might reserve it for lower enlisted. You can get government managed housing that's out on the economy, generally they're small neighborhoods of just US personnel, this is what my family and I did, we had a huge house and it was in a nice area with local grocery stores and a few restaurants. The only other option that was out there in hohenfels was that you rented a house from a rental agency, the housing office in hohenfels had their contact info. The only issues I knew of from folks that did that was that their houses were small.

If it's still like when I was there 1989-1992 it is by rank. Based on modern times I'd guess you'll stay on post. I'm sure someone with more recent information here can provide! You'll really enjoy the close proximity to other countries. MSG David Lee enjoy it to the fullest during your off duty time! My wife and I would pack a picnic basket and travel half a gas tanks worth in various directions castle hunting. Great times and memories!
