What are the policies on promotions after a flag is removed?

I am currently in AIT and I just graduated my course. When I first arrived here I was flagged for APFT failure and they refused to give me another PT test for a few months.. Due to this I remained flagged for around 6 months. When I passed my PT test, they forgot to remove the flag and I found out about it 2 months later. I finally got them to remove the flag and I asked about getting promoted to Pv2. All of my Platoon Sargeants swear up and down that since I was flagged for about 8 months, I have to wait an additional 8 months to get promoted because that time I was flagged is considered "Dead Space" that doesn't count towards my promotion date. I am almost to the point where I should be an E-3 according to Time and Service.. Is this policy correct?

I ended up looking through AR 600-8-2 and AR 600-8-19 to find some answers and I didnt see any mention of a probationary period after a flag was removed, so I brought that up to my Platoon Sargeants with the supporting documents in hand and they confirmed that what I had stated was true and I am now being promoted on the 1st of June. :)

You did great. I wished I had done something like that and till this day, I regret not bringing up something I read about.

Simply as to speak with the Senior Cadre or the 1SG, requesting Open Door Policy. The 1SG will know the answer. Thank you for your service.

Sounds like a command policy. My suggestion would be to focus on doing the best you can on PT and your MOS, the hard work will pay off and you'll get rid of the mosquito wings when chain feels you earned it. The same will fall into play when getting promoted to the sham shield so you might as well roll with the punches and embrace the suck early on. Nobody like being a private for long so I understand the frustration but failing a PT is more or less inexcusable.

Why is it ok to fail a PT test prior to deployment, and or during? Heck one can be a fat pig and still receive deployment orders (favorable action)? The same goes for promotions! Those early promotions are as simple as the company commander signing the promotions sheet that is sent to the unit

Because many would just fail the PT test or get fat to get out of going to war. Many instance of that before Desert Shield.
