For those who do not, the M247 SGT York was developed in the 1970s as a companion to the M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle and the M1 Abrams Tank. It utilized the M48 Patton Tank carriage and had a turret which was designed for anti-aircraft application. The program was cancelled in the 1980s due to serious cost over runs.

WOW!!! This is a piece of equipment I didn't know about. Looks to be a pretty decent weapon to use but it's understandable the cost was too much.

I think the problem with the SGT York was that once you fire a shell, you have no more control over it. The radar can point you in the right direction, and give you a range to set a fuse with, but the shell still has to be near the target when it explodes, or all you are doing is producing a fireworks show.
The Vulcan had a decent ground attack role, but the 57 mm shell in the SGT York wasn't effective against armor and was too expensive to use on infantry.

I think we ripped off the commies. It was too similiar to the mass produced ZSU 57-2.
(Z=Self Propelled) SU= (Anti-aircraft) 57=(diameter in mm's) -2= (# of barrels).

From what I read about it, it didn't seem very befitting for it's namesake when it couldn't hit its targets. A total insult to Alvin York.

SFC Mark Merino In my research, I remember reading this was in response to the ZSU 57-2.

PO3 Isaac Bilano You are correct. This was an abysmal piece of gear and it never targeted or functioned as it was intended.

I saw this in a museum, think it was at Ft Knox at the time. Been so long ago.
