I've heard a bit about why he resigned, but basically it sounds like he was fired but allowed to leave under his own "wind." Does anyone in RP know anything more? Was it political or actually his failure to perform?

Never liked Hagel. He just came across as a weak and mouse-like Yes-man. Apparently he and Obama had differences of opinion so maybe he had a little more spine that I imagined. I don't envy anyone having to take his place and work for a Cmdr-in-Chief so lacking in integrity.

You can feel the way you want about the man I don't care, but SGT Hagel was an infantry squad leader in the Vietnam War.
He served in Vietnam with 9th Infantry Division alongside his brother Tom. They earned five Purple Hearts between the two of them.
He was twice wounded in Vietnam and saved his brother's life. Tom had saved Chuck's life earlier.
So I have no doubt he probably had EVEN more spine than you imagined.

It appears that way. He just didn't come across as a strong leader. He always adopted a submissive posture around Obama. His stock went up when he refused to release more GTMO detainees just because Obama wants to make good on a political promise to close GTMO.
