How can I be released from my Reserve unit to go active?

Question for you, how far into your Reserve Contract are you? Most Reserve Commanders do not release SM with less than 1 year into their contract. Also another thing to keep in mind if you have receive any bonus in will be terminated with recpuopment. Aside from that it will take about 4 to 6 months the DD368 has to be sign3d by the first O6 in your COC. Things have changed since 1984 recruiters are veryh proactive in providing assistance. I was previously a DA Civilian as a Reserve Unit administrator. Here is what I would do contact your UA and ask to set up a time to go in and ask to see the personnel action in ePAT ( all personeel actions are submitted through this system) when speaking to your UA keep in mind most of them are also a NCO in your unit so he tactful, As the UA and.a E6 nothing drove me more crazy tht someone demanding something, so be tactfull! if it is not there it has not been submitted. Unfortunatly UA's are measured on perfomance and Conditional releases are not high on their priority list as a invoulantary separation packet. When you go in to see your UA bring everything you have your DD4 packet, DD214 from basic and AIT. You will need to type a letter of justification (stating why you need/want to go active. In my experience financial complications are the best justification) you will need to sign a counseling statement from your Co. If you have not done these things then your action packet has not been submitted.

Conditional Releases always move slow. I did mine in 1984 when President Reagan was building the Army up by a significant amount. Even though there was heavy demand on Active Duty for my MOS at the time, the entire process took 4-6 months. The reason is you have several things going against you. #1 USAREC regulations are that Army Recruiters are not to talk to you or help you until the Conditional Release is signed and if they get caught doing so they can get into a lot of trouble. Even with this reg in place you can get some to help you on a limited basis. #2. National Guard Commanders are performance rated in part based on unit retention of Soldiers and they take a hit in the performance rating if NG Soldiers start to swarm to Active Duty. #3. Because of the part-time nature of the National Guard, passing a form up to Battalion level or higher to get signed can take several monthly drills vs just a few days or a week for the Regular Army. #4. the Regular Army is not really growing that much these days and they have no issues finding recruits off the street.

So what I did is kept asking my PSG or 1SG what the status was on the release every other Monthly Drill, I did try every Monthly drill but for a NG 1SG that is a little too frequent and your going to irritate them if you do it that frequently. Your 1SG initiates the form I believe then informs your Company Commander, then it goes to Bn.......not sure if it goes higher. Once it returns signed from Bn your 1SG should know about it but also your going to be scheduled for a retention meeting with your 1SG then a retention meeting with your Company Commander. Your Company Commander makes the final decision on the release and will sign it at the end of your retention meeting. Once the release is signed you have 45 or 90 days (I forget which but it is NOT a lot of time) to get enlisted to Active Duty. If your not physically enlisted by the end of the window, your conditional release is no longer valid and you return to your NG unit. Hence it pays to have your ducks lined up with a Regular Army Recruiter as far as getting you in ASAP once that release is signed. If the RA Recruiter tells you there is a significant wait for Prior Service enlistments or they are heavily restricted......your screwed.
