I was on head count a few days ago and I spoke to one of the cooks about what I saw from my last unit. I told him that, from my understanding, the DFAC made enough food for the average number of people that ate there and any leftovers were thrown away. He told me that it was true. Given that not everyone goes back to the line for seconds, is there any way that we can give the leftovers to homeless veterans or homeless individuals in general?

HELL NO ! Those veterans have served and sacrificed for the security of this nation, they deserve better than leftovers. I would gladly give up my place in line and even pay for them to eat along with everyone else.

I think you're missing the point... Yes they deserve better but I can guarantee most would rather have that meal than nothing.

I see many people citing heath codes and lawsuits as reasons why not. I am curious as to why no one has really pursued this one and made it a big deal. If we can get AR 670-1 changed in days and AR 600-20 changed in hours, we should be able to come up with something that is a win win for everyone.

I agree SSG Christopher Freeman, but since this is charitable giving, I don't think any wants to make waves, I know I don't. as long as we are able to donate packeged and canned food, I understand the limitations and am happy to oblige.

I completely agree with you. With the way the military is going in the ways of drawdown, this would be a near impossible sell to senior leaders. The intentions are great and everything, but at the end of the day, the military is not trying to be held responsible for anyone getting sick or worse. A rock and a hard place.

I like the post. Can't take the food anywhere because of rules. Fine. Pick up these guys from a spot in town and bus them in to the DFAC. Something can be done.
