Does Germany really have 2-month-long field exercises supporting NATO that are considered deployments?

Why do they consider them deployments is it because of the duration or are they giving out combat patches or something?

Technically, I believe a deployment is simple leaving your duty station with a unit for a predetermined amount of time. It doesn't have to mean a combat tour.

SPC David Willis - No doubt. I have to admit that the two week time seems a bit arbitrary to me, so I don't know if that is per regs or just based on barracks' chatter.

If all that is true then I have was deployed several times during my 27 months in Korea. And, these "deployments" were far away from home compound, usually in either snow or monsoons. Are there any additional benefits or recognitions available? I even have a letter of commendation from a BG for what I did on one such assignment. Where do I learn more?

PVT Mark Brown - I don't believe there are any special awards or commendations for peacetime deployments. Obviously awards are usually handed out in higher numbers than in garrison but for there to be a ribbon or benefits it typically has to be a war zone.

But, how do military people understand the word "deployment"? It would seem to me that this term would encompass far more than taking an extended field trip. If not, ask any infantry, artillery or commo (tactical commo) guy about this.

SGT (Join to see) you do not get a combat patch unless you are in a combat zone receiving IDP.
