The civilian Senior Executive Service in DOD and other departments, coupled with similar but not as elite Senior Leader positions that used to be GS16-18+ (and political appointees) are comparable to general officers in terms of scope and authority. What are your thoughts on their effectiveness?

I vote yes, they are needed, SGM (Join to see)

I worked fairly closely with three SESs at the Pentagon in the 2008/2009 time frame, and they were really good at what they did. They essentially filled slots that could have been filled by GOs, but they were in those slots and they were getting things done.

Had my fun acting SES. Makes more sense in DOD than other places.

The question is why is it easier to get rid of a GO as opposed to an SES? (Specifically the current VA SES in the news)

SESers have their own personnel system, outside of GS. Even if you remove one, for other than a really big offense, if they came from the "ranks" of GS15, they sometimes can revert back, like an OCS officer can revert to enlisted status under RIF, but not misconduct. GOs like all of us fall under UCMJ, which can sometimes give you more rights than you'd have in CivyLand. Much depends on who makes the charges, under what conditions, and what the appointment authority is. Since we are in the military protecting Democracy (sometimes DemocraZy)--we owe it to everyone to ensure they get a fair shake. I've certainly seen a soldier railroaded a time or two and think that is wrong and stood up to stop it. Can't have it both ways and have credible justice.

Yes, I would say they are. You have to figure all your Secretaries (not talking about typists) and their Deputies have to be civilian. I have worked with many SES that are great people and care deeply about their jobs and those in uniform. Many of them are prior military. As with anywhere, there are many that are full of themselves and have the holier than thou attitude, then there are others yet, that do a good job but should be locked in a room alone because they have no social skills whatsoever.

SCPO Gosnell, those are Executive Level political appointees beyond the nature of career SES. But we get the point. Agree.

Yes, they are needed and good at what they do. Besides, most of them are prior service anyways!

SCPO Gosnell, agree. However, Service Secretaries are Executive Level, not SES per se.
