MSG(P) Michael Warrick, being an older guy, I think some of the old school ways are better. When it comes to respect, traditional values, and things like that, I'm a believer in old school. However, times change, and with that change come improvements in certain things (tactics and technology, for example), so there's a mix. There's no denying that old school values should never change (in my opinion), but being ready and able to adapt to change in certain areas (new school) is also critical to success.

CW2 (Join to see), my military journey began in 1975, and respect was instilled in me, in a big way, from day one. I'm sure everyone's experience is personal and unique. For me, though, respect was a cornerstone of military life. Still is, in fact.

I mean, I saw an awful lot more of general customs and courtesies for SURE - but people being called "faggot" constantly in public for smiling, and things of similar and equally stupid nature, were rampant. I don't think now nor did I think then that behavior was respectful in the least bit.

CW5 Scott Montgomery - much like you I believe the old school ways are better, but we do remain to stay open minded for new school ways that are better than the old.

Leaders were respected more and had more authority. NCO's and officers. What is seen today is a backlash from the failures of certain leaders to enforce basic standards and live up to those standards. I have seen a COL, LTC, and two CSM's relieved for not doing the right thing over the course of just three years. Those same leaders a decade ago would had still had their jobs. Leaders were tactically and technically proficient in the past and soldiers saw that. Soldiers saw this and respected leaders which instilled discipline and authority to reinforce the chain and support channel. Soldiers get more into the regulation these days and as leaders if we are not abreast with these regulations and changes to doctrine we are giving up power. I have had two raters that did not know that they were supposed to conduct initial and quarterly DA Form 2166-8-1's instead of monthly DA form 4856's. So I had to produce these form myself and one other soldier another SGT whom I was designated as a ratr over which was wrong. But I did it to take care of the soldiers first NCOER because the officer had no clue. So to reiterate officers and NCO's are not as good AS THEY USED TO IN SOME RESPECTS. BUT THE FAILURES OF THOSE SAME LEADERS HAS CREATED A CLIMATE IN WHICH WE ARE MICRO MANAGED BY CONGRESS.

Yes and no! Honor and traditions run deep and need to be upheld to enact a sense of comrade. But with changes in technology and in the standard of society, one must Improvise, overcome and adapt! Semper Gumbi!
