Is it appropriate to travel in uniform if I am reporting to my AIT a day early?

You generally are authorized to wear your Service uniform (ASU) at any place and time not prohibited by regulation. Make sure your uniform is in good condition and your behavior reflects professionalism and you'll be okay.
I don't like seeing military personnel traveling aboard commercial flights in their work or combat uniforms. I believe it's authorized these days, but I'm old school and think the Service uniform looks better.

Yes sir pretty much spot on, I always preferred civis though so I could skip that awkward interaction where folks pretended to care about me for a moment before going back to sipping coffee and texting their holler back girls. Also trainees travel with no unit insignia or unit crests or anything, which could lead to GI Joe assholes thinking he is stealing valor videotaping him asking him questions that a trainee quite seriously may not know yet.

c. Personnel on official travel and traveling by commercial travel means will wear the service uniform or appropriate civilian attire. Soldiers may wear the combat uniform on commercial flights only when deploying/redeploying or on rest and recuperation leave to and from the combat theater. However, Commanders may authorize service or utility uniforms for Soldiers when traveling by commercial travel for emergency leave or casualty assistance duties.

Just wear civis. With all the people going around yelling stolen valor your lack of any unit insignia could cause an asshole to start poking his nose where it doesn't belong. Also its just easier, don't have to worry about TRADOC folks hemming you up, and more importantly you can have a beer! Just change at your duty station to formally report.

if your orders say that early reporting is authorized then yes other wise I would travel in Civilian attire and then report in uniform.
