Like a recent post.."Should graduates of the USASMA receive a degree?"  I ask what is more valuable, a 24 year old graduate with a MBA and zero experience or a CSM who's managed hundreds to thousands of people and millions of dollars in assets?

Another example is to do the exact same job that I currently do as a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, I need a masters degree to do the civilian equivalent that works here in the hospital with me and he's a GS13.  We do the exact same thing.  Once I get out of the Army all of a sudden I dont qualify.

I think we put way too much emphasis on that peice of paper as opposed to putting the best "qualified" folks in the positions.

Go onto USA Jobs and take a look at the requirements.  You will see MANY jobs that are military jobs that some SSG is doing somehwere else, but to do it as a GS employee you need a degree in this or that.  I think it's a conspiracy.

Short answer is yes.  I know some people with MBA's that couldn't manage a lemonade stand.

The other issue for many of the GS jobs as well you need to have at least a year experience at the next lower grade or equivalent, and I have been told on many that military experience doing the same job many times doesn't count as have 52 weeks in the previous grade.


It all goes back many times to who you know to get your foot in the door.

That is an issue I have been talking about for years even before I retired. I started looking for and applying for positions that I knew were closing somewhere around my actual transition date, but was not being considered for any because I didn't have the degree.
