As long as you have your MSW and your LCSW (or it’s equivalent) you can direct commission. If you’re applying to the social work program then you just need your undergrad with the requisite social science and human biology courses.

At the pre- and post-deployments I've attended supporting with the USO that's what I've been told (most are retired military and active social workers). One of the primary reasons I wanted to go for my master's. That in addition to a Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor (CADAC - which the Federal Government recognizes) there are a lot of jobs coming up. PO3 Justin Hope - it seems like there will be a great need for SW's with military backgrounds. I believe the Major is right. I know a few interns that are with my field placement who have BSW's are going "Fast Track" in a 1-year master's program.

Good Luck

Thank you for the response Maj. Gregory Mabry. I currently have my LCSW and am working as a hospital social worker at the VA hospital in Gainesville Fl. The reason I asked the original question was because I keep getting told by my recruiter that the competition for a direct commission as a social worker is very steep, and I am would like to know any certifications or additional experiences that might give me an edge over the other applicants. I have extensive case management and crisis intervention experience, and am well versed in utilizing motivational interviewing for solution focused work, but have very little actual therapy/counseling work under my belt, which I fear may make me under qualified when compared to other applicants.
