Will I rejoin my unit after AIT if they deploy a few months before I graduate?

I am currently in the National Guard RSP program. I ship for AIT in June and will graduate in August. The unit that I am attached to after RSP is being deployed to Afghanistan in June before I ship for AIT. I've been told that I will join them in Afghanistan after I finished AIT. Is this true? I am really wanting to be deployed and am afraid that I will miss my chance while I'm gone at AIT.

It all depends on the unit command. I have seen this play out different ways. If your unit has a need for you then they might call you up and deploy you. Some units are allowed to go 100% in manpower. They do this to cover any openings. So if they mobilize with 110% and lose a few along the way they still may have near 100% and not request for anyone to deploy. But it is up to the unit.

From what I've been told, my unit is down quite a bit of people due to them doing other training or something like that, so other people from other units are possibly going. Would something like this (a lack of unit personnel) boost my chances of deploying?

Again it all depends on unit needs. They may just augment personnel from other units to reach the strength they need for the deployment. Occasionally some personnel are left behind to keep the unit running at home. You may find they just keep you at your home station.

If your unit says they will have you report to link up with them while deployed then yes, you will. The fact that you want to deploy means it is even more important for you to complete training on time and remain healthy. Train up as much as you can and strengthen your body so that you don’t end up getting recycled. Best of luck.

You will learn that your unit and the company commander in charge of you have nearly 100% say in what happens with you.
There are a few instances where they may want to send you but some regulation or higher echelon declines to send you but it is unlikely. Just be squared away and your unit will fight for you to be able to join them.
