I have huge holes in my memory. I also struggle with making new memories. Drives my family bonkers. I'm constantly forgetting things BUT ...... damn, forgot what I was gonna say.... anyway, you learn to do mnemonic hints or write things down, again if it is remembered to do so. I get flashes sometimes when looking at photos or when other senses are in use, but my mind is hiding things from me on purpose. I've learned to deal with it and I make sure to tell people close to me that I may need help remembering things.

Memory is described by psychology as the ability of an organism to store, retain, and subsequently retrieve information. When an individual experiences a traumatic event, whether physical or psychological, his or her memory can be affected in many ways. For example, trauma might affect his or her memory for that event, memory of previous or subsequent events, or thoughts in general.

I was never put on meds, I'll state that up front.
I didn't experience memory loss from PTSD alone. I did experience anger issues, sleep issues, and bad dreams. Plus, for about a year or so after my second tour I had an issue with handling raw ground beef. I waited way longer than I should have to seek treatment for it (ignoring the issue and all) but I managed to find that talking back and forth with a behavioral health worker helped a lot.
Still won't touch meds.
Not sure if that helps or is relevant.
