They were still Air Police when I entered that career field in 1966 and was then assigned as an Air Policeman to the 351st Combat defense Squadron, (SAC) In 1967-68 time zone they changed it to Security Police which We did not like ! Later when I worked Law Enforcement as a Desk Sergeant I would not even answer the phone Security Police, I said Base Police.

I was an Air Policeman at RAF Wethersfield, UK, 20th Air Police Sq, from 1964-1967. We became Security Police in the 67-68 time frame.

My recollection is the Air Police, or Apes as they were called, did police work and the Security police did security such as shooting folk who crossed the red line around certain aircraft. SPs had rifles and Apes had pistols.
