Is it legal for PFC to skip SPC and be promoted to CPL without P status (no promotion board experience)?

SGT (Join to see) I have never done this, but from SPC to CPL is a lateral appointment and does not require a board. However, IMHO if you are wearing CPL you should be in a leadership position and acting as a SGT.

LTC (Join to see), I've been out for sometime, but I thought much of this would be driven by the MTO&E of an organization. If the PFC is advanced into a position that called for a corporal and not a specialist, wouldn't the soldier simply become a corporal? SGT (Join to see)

LTC Stephen C. - Sir, I believe it still requires paperwork signed by the CDR to state that they are a CPL.

Understood, LTC (Join to see). I would assume that orders would be cut, but simply state corporal and not specialist. My point is that if the MTO&E calls for a corporal and not a specialist, the PFC would simply be advanced to corporal, correct?

LTC Stephen C. - that is a great question, Sir. I know I have put PFCs in SPC positions and SGT in SSG, but I never had a CPL position on my UMR so I never ran into that.

It is entirely possible to go from PFC straight to CPL. Really it just depends on the soldier, his or her proven performance, his senior leaders, and if they need an NCO
