I'm just wondering how this will continue to pan out and your thoughts on this. Keep in mind to keep this discussion professional.

Putin stated not to long ago, as reported from CNN: "I want to remind you that Russia is one of the most powerful nuclear nations," the President said. "This is a reality, not just words."

No one will intentionally use nuclear weapons. Putin and China's Polite Bureau enjoy their comforts more than we do.

I think we need to take Russia very seriously as a political super power. Why? They have gone from an economically frail country to a very rich country based on their newly discovered oil drilling capabilities. They have huge oil fields that are literally refueling their income. And we know what money can do!

Rgr Col (Join to see). I think some people in the world are shocked by fast moving nature of events that have occurred; probably some degree of denial that the problem will self-correct. This is starting to remind me of Command and Conquer 3. Thought I would never see the day where I felt what my parents felt in regards to Russia.

CPT (Join to see) - As a former Russian specialist in Army MI, I can tell you that the Russians never really disappeared. Even at their worst they had the nuclear weapons that could fry us to a crisp, and Putin has spent the last decade+ expanding his arsenal. He's frustrated because no one except a few Stalinist Russians want the return of the Soviet Union and Russian confrontation with the West. But he is determined to avenge the humiliation of Russia, just as Hitler was determined to avenge the German loss of World War I. People like that, obsessing about past perceived wrongs, have led the world into very bad places.

Petroleum product production is a dying industry. Either we get out of the burning of all carbon based fuels, which would shut the demand for petroleum off, or we will cause two rather serious and nasty things to happen. One is causing the destruction of the biosphere making the planet uninhabitable for oxygen breathing life forms. The second thing would be the rising atmospheric temperatures will cause the melting of the Arctic and Antarctic ice caps, thus raising the seal levels to extreme levels. Such a calamity would cause huge losses of life and the loss of large land areas. Either way the need for oil goes south in a hurry.

The fact this was posted eight years ago and the same issue hasn't been resolved, is a bit startling.
