I though they were polite and respectfully listened to his speech. I didn't see any hecklers or people inappropriately protesting or throwing shoes (which cannot be said of other speeches made by other presidients). If he got a tepid response to his talking points, then maybe it's because they were not in agreement with his policy. That should be an indicator to the POTUS and his staff that maybe he needs to reassess what the wants to do....or not....

I don't believe it's written in any AR or other manual anywhere that we have to applaud at predetermined points, or else we have 'failed to render the respect befitting the Commander in Chief.'

I believe they did treat him with the appropriate respect that they felt he deserved. Just being the CIC does not mean a standing ovation for every statement made. You want to be a leader convince us you are! Because your actions speak otherwise.

SGT Matt Windsor IRT your comment - you're correct - for veterans, which is the group he was addressing. However, trust me, I've worked in the Washington, D.C. area way too long in my lifetime - AD is always required to HOOAH on command with POTUS in attendance. I've been part of 14 Presidential visits to troops, both in the country and oconus. Whether the order comes from POTUS sycophants or the receiving military unit leadership....SOMEBODY in the COC will make it an ORDER for military personnel to loudly make the appropriate noises on cue. Like I said, I've only been part of 11 Presidential visits - none of which I enjoyed - and 5 different Presidents. The name of the man changed, but the required HOOAH, etc never did.

I think the silence spoke volumes about how many veterans feel. While the active duty military has to give the HOOAH on demand - these men and women of the American Legion and other VeteranService Organizations have no such requirement. Veteran Service Organization (VSO) speak for our military on active duty when they cannot - so it's important to speak out to these VSO's so they are aware of how our military brethren feel on subjects near and dear to your hearts. My only concern is that the respectful silence and the tepid clapping message is understood in both ears by the CinC.

This is a fitting qoute for all leaders from the CinC on down.
The day the soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help them or concluded that you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership. Colin Powell

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. - John Stewart Mill

I wouldn't call it disrespectful at all. Our politicians all seem to EXPECT applause whenever they pause for a second. Not getting it isn't disrespect, but then, I'm not a big believer in adoration-on-demand.
