I want to become a Green Beret, but considering the route the Army is going now, should I look forward to doing something different?

I want to do something more with my career and I feel stagnate even though I haven't been in long. I just feel like I should do something now or I never will. If I'm not mistaken the army is going more back towards garrison so I just want to know your thoughts and if I should look forward to doing something different.

SFC (Join to see) - Let's be clear, Your Response was useless and Fucking Sucked. Fucking Do It, Your day will suck really elevated this young soldier's understanding of Special Forces and a reason to consider attending selection. It was extremely fucking helpful. You said you enjoy cursing, so I am making sure I pepper my comment with plenty. Also, you might have really enjoy the previous statement on being helpful; but that was sarcasm. You left this SPC with Fucking Nothing to help his decision. Wait, you did give him the perception that SF soldiers are bullies, illiterate, and disrespectful. I do enjoy those days of tradition when I would curse it up with the team and bully other soldiers. Of course, that was only after I received the proper class on the Army Traditions. I miss those days of Fucking tradition. I do remember one tradition that Special Forces' soldiers have had for a long time. We are described and live the motto as "Quiet Professionals". I think you missed that whole Fucking Block of instruction.
SPC Joshua; I apologize for this answer from this Soldier. Please do not judge this individual's useless comment or examples of unprofessional behavior and disrespect as an example of a Special Forces soldier. I will say Special Forces is not a choice, but a commitment. It will be hard. You will need to increase your understanding on the selection and life as a Special Forces soldier. You will be trained and tested to an elite level in which less than 20% of candidates achieve .
I joined after spending 4 years in the Marines. I sat next to a SF soldier at a bar and listen more than talked for four hours. Because of that chance meeting, I joined the Army after my enlistment and pursued being a SF soldier. Then it was all about wanting a challenge and to achieve membership in an elite force. I gained that and more as a quiet professional. You will be trained to the highest level, travel the world, work with the finest military members, and make a real difference. I hope you luck and success.

LTC David Zimmerman - Welcome to a discussion that was already concluded. First off I'd like to say get over yourself. Do you see anything about where cursing is used to belittle or brow beat someone? You don't. Cursing has been a part of small units, whether it be an Infantry platoon, a Special Forces Detachment, or a recon team. That was the whole point of the conversation.
However, you decided to interject a bit of arrogant jackassery. It had nothing to do with helping the SPC who was asking the question. It had to do with the opinion someone had to using the word fuck. If you had ever stepped out of your office and interacted with any of your men below the company level, you would see the word fuck being used freely in an open and informal manner. That informal environment pretty accurately describes how most relationships, to include those between leaders and subordinates, in Special Forces are.
Your laughably rabid response got a chuckle out me, so you have that going for you. As far as your petty opinion, well stick it in your forth point of contact and spin to your heart's delight.

Wow... this whole thread from Officers and Enlisted alike shows a lack of professionilism. Yes there is a lot of cussing on an ODA. BUT the back and forth from both O's and E's is a very piss poor example from all of you... E-whatever to O-anything. How about you all take a slice of humble pie and STFU.
To the Specialist... Special Forces... the Green Berets is a great way for people to THINK they are escaping the Conventional Army. The fact is that even as a SF guy you HAVE to be better at being Conventional than they are. People are always head hunting, on both sides. You are compensating with others that are better than the best.... SO to get where you want to be you have to be better!
As a (ret) 18B I can tell you that you are the work horse on an ODA. You own everything that is heavy, the guns don't clean themselves, and tactics are ever changing and constantly evolving. You SHOULD be more educated than your leadership about ground tactics.... you SHOULD read war experts from Sun Tzu, to Gen. McCrhrystal...
to these people beating their chests, and going back and forth... FUCK THEM...
Yes cursing is used a lot in SF and other small units, however you have to be professional at all times and it appears that people on this feed seem to have forgotten as SF soldier you have to get into the mud and muck and then the next day get into a suit and breif in an embassy!
If you want to work more, do more with less, and be able to reach for any type of gov. Service after the Army... SF IS THE WAY to go.
But I will be honest as I was with everyone that asked me about going SF. IF you are trying to go to escape, DON'T. You will fail, maybe not during selection or the Q-course, but maybe 5-7 years after getting to an ODA. If you want to be a team guy, work your ass off, be part of something great, and make a difference with your work. GO!
Don't care what others think or say, be fit, be smart, and stick by YOUR principles! You will have a rewarding career even when you are in a rough part, you have something you love doing. Being a weapons SGT I always had guns and ranges, CQB, and LD shooting. Nothing clears the head like zoning out and just driving rounds through the same hole... getting up and showing your team how it's done... MOST arguments are settled on the range!!!
Maybe the people above should all meet and have a beer shoot...

The army will most likely do at least a 3 year turn around since the Trumpster won, and with the ISIS as wild card you can most likely find a good home in SF... for the next 12-15 years...
Don't be deterred from your dreams... IF you want it ... go for it grab it and growl...
But Remember They will try to cut you out
They will push you past your limits
They will stress you beyond your coping points ...
They will try to break you...
If you pass and graduate you will never look back and the rest ot the army will look so ordinary...
One of the Advantages is SF is a Force Multiplier and they can be used around the world of a moments notice...
They Have been exempt from hack and slash cuts since Reagan... only Carter cut the ranks
hang in there and hang tough...
DOL...

If you have something we need, by all means step to the plate. It's a long and hard road, but well worth it. There's a slot on an ODA in one of the Groups for you, but come prepared, you're going to be busy.

I feel like I can bring a lot to the table. I have the physical capabilities, the Want To attitude, I'm easy to coach because I just love to learn new things and I can think fast on my feet. My only downfall is that I'm too hard on myself and I psych myself out. Working on that everyday

SGT (Join to see) - The attributes you described are all good, but just like I use to tell students when I was an instructor, don't self select. The hardest obstacles you will encounter in the Q course are self induced. If it's really what you want and are dead serious about earning the coveted Green Beret, you will have no problem. I wish you lots of luck and if you ever have any questions, I'm here. Good luck buddy.

Thank you very much MSG. Also to include when it comes to being a RTO I'm the guy. From radio propagation, antenna theory, radio theory and dealing with HF I learned that early in my career and been good at it ever since. I appreciate the words of encouragement and I can't wait to get to where you are today. MSG Dan Castaneda -

SPC Joshua C. .... if you want to go to SF, put all your knowledge and skills to the test. Go to selection, and don't quit. The MSG is correct, people quit and self-select because it SUCKS. If you are a good RTO think about becoming an 18E. Be prepared, it's more than radios and theories. Computers, networks, phones, and shit... if you can't make comma, you better be prepared to dig a trench and run wires from room to room... (seen it happen) if it has a battery, minus weapons and weapons accessories.... it's yours.
The best advice is go fit, do t overtrain, be healthy, humble, and be confident.
SF, there is only one color... GREEN!
