I have a speech coming up and my topic is over the extended maternity leave for the Air Force. Does anyone have any ideas that I could start with for my main points? I have to make it last between 5 and 7 minutes and I am at a bit of a loss. Any ideas will be appreciated.

TSgt Melissa Post Below is an article that you can pull information from. Five to seven minutes is not long, so you will need to practice your speech so you can keep it within the timeframe. I would start out with why this plan benefits both the Air Force and the service member. Then go into the highlights of the plan, followed by a conclusion. You want to summarize this as a win-win for both parties. Good luck!

Thank you sir. I pulled this article and printed it. I am just concerned that I won't be able to find much because I don't know what points to cover aside from the obvious of what it used to be and what it is now. As well as the reason for the change.

TSgt Melissa Post - Melissa, you will do fine. You just want to provide the highlights, so that everyone is familiar with the existing maternity leave policy.

TSgt Melissa Post - I would venture to say that is about all there is to it: what it used to be; reasons for changing it; and provisions of the new policy. You don't have to read a lot into the topic or search for any underlying hidden meaning. The various releases published and online, by the AF & DOD lay it out pretty well. As Sgt (Join to see) says it should be short and sweet. Page 31 of Air Force Instruction 36-3003 11 May 2016 also refers to the program. More details of the instruction are still being worked out and additional guidance should be available from yr 1stSgt

Ahhh yes, I'm not entirely keen on the policy, though I do know a bit about it. Looking at the groups you've posted to, you possibly could use dual military, single parent and single military married to a civilian perhaps? Are you doing this for PME?

Yes. Oh you just gave me an idea of something else to hit up on my outline for one of my points. Thank you! I am not very familiar with this whole thing because well it hasn't affected me yet. :)

I recommend 1 or 2 page handout either article on subject or the main points of your topic. Makes it helpful to listener.

I'm not allowed to have handouts, but I don't even know what my main points of my topic are. That is what I am trying to get advice on. I can write a speech if i know the direction i need to go.
