I love small businesses. Mom and Pops are under siege. Are we stuck with Walmart?

TSgt Joe C. I do too; I just hope that cities and states incentivize them to aid in their survival. Lower taxes...

It's like when the big banks took out the little banks, the big companies with the aid of government bureaucracy (lobbyism+pay for play) are helping with this. It's socialism at play, when corporations and government are one and act separate. This is not capitalism or free market enterprise, this is corruption and pockets getting lined, policies to boot within every level of government. I'd blame it on Obamacare but it is much more of a problem than that. Again, Trump seems the only candidate willing to flat tax business at 15% and work towards cutting unnecessary bureaucracy. The Democrat way is to use welfare(debt) as a stimulus package, our country is teetering on the brink and the moms & pops stores show it.

full disclosure: I am from a a town of 12,000. The closest town to us had a population of 413.
When Wal-Mart came to town - we rejoiced. It brought items to us that were previously unavailable. they employed hundreds of people and offered upward mobility through their corporate ranks. Mom and Pops are cool, but they typically only hire family. There is no upward mobility if you're not family.
There is a place for them, think of Ace Hardware - their business actually went up after Home Depot and Lowes arrived.

You have really put your finger on the dichotomy of issues that face small businesses. SKUs and the ability to provide jobs to the community are what increases the perceived value of a business to the people that patronize it.

while I was at college, getting "smarter" I brought into the whole "wal-mart is evil/corporate America" theme. I mentioned this my dad while home one w/e and he pointed out the employment opportunities. This may have been the point where I began to notice my parents as smarter than I gave them credit for, but I realized that businesses must change with the landscape IOT survive. They need to stay ahead of the curve IOT thrive! This also leads back into my dilemma for the conversation on start ups vs franchise. Great discussion sir, thanks for the opportunity.

I can say that in my home town, WM paid more than any other employer for entry level jobs. I can't speak to anything above that but it was tool to use if you want to move up. People can't live on entry level positions, that was never the intent and there was never room to move up in a mom and pop unless you were related.
