I was recently given and failed a PT test a week off of coming off a profile for an ankle injury and was told this is not in accordance with Army Regulations and that I should file a complaint with the IG. However, before I go off making a fool of myself, I'd like to verify. The latest version of FM 7-22 that I can find, is from 2013. And I did find where it says that. Is there a newer FM 7-22?

As of July 2016, there is no longer an automatic recovery period for temporary profiles. Recovery is now built into the profile itself. No one is grandfathered in, so if you had a temp profile prior to July, you'd need to have your doctor convert your old profile to the new profile format.

If you go to armypubs, look for Army Directive 2016-07. It states:

"(2) Profiling officers will write all temporary profiles for the entire expected
duration of the duty limitation up to 90 days. Given that temporary profiles do not
prevent Soldiers from taking the Army Physical Fitness Test, profiling officers will
designate on DA Form 3349 when the Soldier can take the test. The profiling officer
may also designate on the form that the Soldier take an alternate aerobic event.
(3) Soldiers will no longer have an automatic recovery period after the
termination of their temporary profiles. "

And this is a vast improvement over the previous system. I never understood why the Army would give a profile precluding an APFT, then twice as long to recover before taking an APFT.
I know, I know. In theory, the Soldier would not be able to perform the exercises in order to prepare for an APFT during the profile period. But twice as long? Never made sense to me.
Seems to me that if the profile was for a short duration, the muscles would not atrophy and only the injury would need to heal, give or take. A longer profile would take longer to recover from, but you run that troop through the "build" PT program and they should be ready in 8 weeks or so.
Just my two cents.
At the end of the day, I enforce what's on the books, whether I think it is logical or not.

I applaud you in seeking knowledge - knowledge is power, but I advise you to exercise that knowledge with tact. I assume you are junior in your career, and one the most beneficial things you can do now is become proficient in your MOS and then read, read, read - everything you can get ahold of!

Something to consider, your Team Leader/Squad Leader/Platoon Sergeant do not get a bonus to keep promotions away from you, for kicking Soldiers out etc....as a matter of fact, they prefer to rehab a Soldier and have a productive member of the team - my point is don't go away thinking this is automatically something negative.

A couple things to consider (to put you more at ease here).....was it a record PT test - or did your NCO say "we are going test you to let you see where you are"? If it was not a record test, it was a diagnostic.

The Inspector General is a great resource and an awesome tool for you as well as the chain of command - they will help you find the most current doctrine if you are ever at a point in the future and are wondering where to go for something (even if you want an example xyz)....give the squad leader a chance to solve it before taking it to the IG, then ensure you let him/her know you'd like some time to go see the IG. The IG is the check and balance to ensure units are following procedural guidance as outlined in the regulations.

Roger that, Sergeant Major.

It was a record test, as I've already been flagged and been counseled by the CO and 1SG about separation. I'm bringing my findings to my first line so that hopefully I don't need to see the IG because I know that things won't work well if I don't try to solve it before bringing in the third-party. Thank you for all the advice, Sergeant Major.
