I am a 1LT(P) Armor Officer who, up to this point, has planned on transitioning out of the Army once my initial 4 year commitment is complete. As of late, however, I have been exploring functional areas that are currently accepting 1LT(P), one of which is FA53. Current FA53 officers, do you regret your decision? Did you enjoy the transition? Thank you. I am excited for new opportunities!

I absolutely enjoy my job as a 53, I was going to walk away from a 16 year career (at that time) without it. If I had it to do all over again, I certainly would. Additionally the 53 course gave me the opportunity to earn a Masters from Syracuse!

Sir, was it extremely competitive to become a FA53? I am also interested with the procedures. Also, are certain degrees required to even apply?

It’s about as competitive as any other program, look at the requirements in the MILPER to ensure that your year group is eligible to transfer under the VTIP.

thank you. I read the requirements and noticed that a STEM degree is not required. I’m looking into obtaining a masters degree in the IT field, but I am curious whether I should just wait to be accepted first.

I for one have not regretted it at all. You should know though to look at 26B Information Technology Systems Engineer, as we will be changing to that on October 1st. I feel the change will be a great enhancement on the field and better align the duties that we perform. Another on to look at would be the 24/26A.

I did functional area 38 Civil Affairs. I enjoyed it. I was selected to Major easily.

Functional areas seem be one of the Army's best kept "secrets", Sir. I hear great things from Officers that have gone into a FA.
