Don't use the words hurt or hurting. You need to be direct, are you planning on killing yourself.

Ask them if they are suicidal. No need to be discreet. If you ask the question, you obviously care - if they answer anything but "Oh, heck no", take it further and offer more help. That's being a friend.

You start it just the way you did. Ask the question that SSgt Jim Gilmore just asked. Don't be shy about it. Don't try and sugar coat it. Don't try and put cherries on top of it. Just ask are you thinking about hurting yourself or someone else? I have realized that when you do that people are more open to talk to you then if you try and beat around the bush.

In my unit and the VA didn't say hurt, as the person doesn't see it as hurting. You need to be direct, are you planning on killing yourself? Do you plan on killing someone else? Otherwise, I agree with you.

Yes you are 100% correct. I do ask both ways. Maybe I need to just start using the work kill instead of Hurt.
