What are some tips for negotiating salary/benefits/hours?

How do you assertively negotiate your salary, benefits, bonuses and hours? I will be coming across this in the near future, I know my worth, but I also don't want to aggravate the hiring manager in the process. Any tips?

I've been told to aim higher than you're really asking so that way you can negotiate down to level you want. I've never tried it personally, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. I've also heard it helps to have a person on the inside who can inform you of what the company is paying others or what benefit packages are available.

I'm no HR specialist, but you're only worth what the market will pay for your skills and performance. If your opinion > skills and/or performance then you can be as aggressive as you want but it won't matter.
Are you going self employed or seeking a new position? Are you a recognized expert in a small field or do you bring something unique to the employer? Need more details unless you just want to generally discuss how much more green the grass is over there...

SPC(P) (Join to see) - awesome! then you should be in a position to ask about the terms of the promotion; hours, duty/responsibilities, other upward opportunities and of course what the pay is. You're in a position to remind them that you were asked to take the position, you're not answering a help wanted add. If it were me, I'd say "Of course I'd like to move up, accept more responsibility and help you (current manager and company) be more successful. Thank you for thinking of me! so please tell me more about the position?" You can steer the conversation back to what you bring to the position based on what they are looking for and it seems that everyone agrees you're the man for the job. Ask about pay with confidence; have a price in mind and ask about future raises/mobility.
