We are well and truly divided. Not nearly as bad as 1860 or 1960, but we are well on the road to 2060. A significant portion of the population has been shielded from the American heritage of limited government and individual freedom. They've been caught in the spell of the siren song sung by the Progressive Movement to replace self-government with administrative government. Sadly, even many who have sworn the oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution have become unwitting allies of domestic enemies. We need to begin teaching the Constitution again. We need to begin rekindling pride in America. We need to be selective in our toleration of "other" ideas. It's dangerous to welcome them when you don't have a solid foundation in the principles that the others want to destroy.

We require a deep culture shift! We will consistently have differences.
Seems as if it's all or nothing "them vs. us" , the liberals, progressives and the media must tone down the doom, gloom and divisive hysteria . Then again, the negativity helps ratings.
We must to return to the basics, self respect, respect others, respect the Constitution, respect for our individual faith/ spiritual leaders, respect our nation, respect our flag , get back to being a proud American. Bring back the Pledge of Allegiance! Abolish PC, we can speak words that are not PC and still not be rude or hateful

I know, I sound delirious BUT I do believe most people to have a compassionate heart...

Is America really divided as the media say we are? Is this a new phenomena or have we always been divided?
Short answer: Yes, we are systematically divided by sex, race, financial status, marital status, children or no children, religion, political affiliation, job title, city, county, state, crazy, sane, allergies, no allergies, fat, skinny, small, medium, large, black hair, blond hair, blue eyes, brown eyes, light skinned, dark skinned, fair skinned - you name it were categorized in it.
How do we get rid of it? Remove the requirements of demographics on applications and other identifying databases - what is the need to know that information for - unless you are seeking to discriminate based on one of the qualifiers for your bias.
When I walk into the room you should already know three things - maybe more about me without me having to write it down or pre-identify it: I am a man, a married man (if you see my ring), and a black man. Why do you need to know anything more prior to me walking into the room? Categorize by the content of my character, not the features I carry.

The only real divide are those that believe they are owed something by the color of their skin and those that refuse to allow it to be a handicap or a crutch. I grew up in a black neighborhood and my childhood best friend's Mother was in grade school at the time of desegregation. She was like a second mother to me regardless how she had been treated in the past. The only color we saw in that household is how you never cross a strong black woman...I could care less what the media wants us to think and believe, I refuse to treat someone different based off the color of their skin and if we all do this, the media will no longer have a story to cover.

I think American is divided because on both sides there are those who not only do not think but blindly follow the leader.

My side all good. You side all bad. No in between.

Thinking Americans may differ in opinion, but are not totally divided.

I'm not sure that's true. It seems that many are against one candidate without being for the other. More like "my side is wrong but your side is 'wronger'". Ultimately, the result may appear to be the same, but the difference, though subtle, is significant.
