I was trying to schedule time off with my civilian employer for training and the course length is 7 weeks and 3 days. But when you look at the start and end dates it is longer than that. What time length should I tell my employers?

Give employer all the info you can. Explain the course dates as listed, as well as the other calendar info you have. Play it straight w your employer, they will understand there is some travel/arrival time in there. When you FINISH the school, you will of course end up with travel voucher documents, pay docs, and orders with actual dates. Allow yourself a day or so of return cushion for planning ... As a civilian (as well As military) supervisor, I would prefer a rested employee returns on time on Monday as planned, rather than last minute no show because class ran 1 day late, problems w making flight connections, Etc.

7 weeks and 3 days does not count for any training holidays or travel time so ensure you plan for them.

This is funny. I work with CeTARS at a Navy training command. Same thing. Your best bet is to contact the school and talk to somebody who actually teaches the course... not someone who will just look it up in the system. Often times, extra time is built in for admin purposes. Also possible that either the course length is wrong, or the person who "built" the course in the system put in the wrong dates.

Good call on getting in touch with the class. I just spoke with someone at the school and got the actual start and end dates. They also pointed out that there are 2 federal holidays during the class that make the class length longer. The best part is that I took the DL version of the class, with permission, only to find out that I had to take the in house course now. Good news, I have all the notes, bad news I spent allot of time on the DL course when I could have been accomplishing other tasks. Got me a little irritated.

I just got out of a meeting concerning this very issue and it made me think of something: You might want to talk to your admin/orders section and make sure there isn't a reason that the dates are different. You may need to be there before/after the course for some kind of admin stuff. I don't know what the course is, but if it's 7 weeks, there may be gear issuance, etc. That being said, if that is the case and you don't care... usually any extra stuff like that can be taken care of as long as you show up on time for the convening of the course. Just something to think about.
