No a NCO cannot give extra duty, only the commander can give a Soldier extra duty as punishment. A NCO can give corrective training to a Soldier but it must be directly related to the deficiency.

EXAMPLE: PVT Snuffy shows up to formation in the wrong uniform after the correct uniform was put out.

SSG Hardcore requires PVT Snuffy to report to the CQ desk three times a day. In the morning PVT Snuffy will be in APFU. In the afternoon he will be in duty uniform and in the evening he will be in ASUs. SSG Hardcore will be present to inspect PVT Snuffy each time.

SPC (Join to see) - Its shame most forms of corrective training have been taken from the hands of leaders....
While some took it too far...No doubt.. and abuse of a subordinate is never right..
losing track of the motor pool key and having said replacement key attached to a stick..that happened to be 4 ft long and 4"x"4 square was an excellent way to remind the SM of the need to properly maintain, secure and keep track of said key.

While being required to "mop" the parking lot in a rainstorm is not textbook retraining for an infraction of being a buddy fucker and hiding during latrine cleaning time.. it is an excellent tool vice just a 4856 and recommendation for Art15 for correcting minor infractions at the lowest level and allowing a SM to move on without NJP in thier reccord.

So ask yourself, do you feel the tasks being assigned or so heinous that you should strive to have the stopped and teh NCO punished for trying to correct minor infractions, modify inappropriate behavior and said NCO should instead counsel and request NJP for those minor infractions?

A good leader knows when to use corrective training, vice a stern word or paper work and ART15 recommendation.. Not the same tool for every SM or event. Know your soldier , know what will affect them most to modify thier behaviour and start small, move up in teh reactions to transgressions as needed.

I look back at having to carry 50 feet of 2" mooring line for a week as a gift that 1SG needed not give me.. He could have asked the commander to give me NJP for repelling out the 3rd floor window over the weekend... I realized doing stupid things was not a good idea, and someone is always watching.

Or the time I carried a broken M901ITV drivers hatch around for a week,,,,,vice being given NJP and FLIPL to pay for the repairs.... I never again left the hatch up and unlocked..

CO: "1SG, PVT Snuffy seems to have a lot of extra energy, do you have something for him to over the long week end?" BWAHAHAHAHA. Que chain gang song. Troops feared Top's chain gang in my days as a E1-E4, so many lousy jobs he could come up with.

What happens if an NCO does give extra duty on a counseling statement? I've seen one on a 4856, instead of a 2627 and it was for 30 days as opposed to the 14 allowed for a company grade officer.

We give corrective training, not extra duty.

NCOs can not give extra duty. They can give corrective training. With the corrective training the punishment must fit the crime. Extra duty can be imposed under ARTICLE 15, the NCO can recommend a punishment of extra duty to the commander, though can not impose it. Hope this helps.
