What could be done to help you and others understand the true nature of the threats and how to protect yourself, your family, your unit/company ect...

I ask this both as part of my school work and as a tool to help me improve my corner of the military.

I'm not sure if you are still looking for answers on this, but I have found that demonstrations are the most effective way to open someone's eyes. I am an IT professional on the civilian side and am very wary of any new threats that are discovered until I see it myself. As an example, I was taking a course on counter-hacking and didn't really take it seriously until the instructor demonstrated an attack that would be extremely difficult to detect or stop and would give the attacker full administrative privileges on a server, going up to domain controllers. This "pass-the-hash" attack was just a point on a slide before that point, but I really took it seriously after seeing it in action.

There's really nothing you can do except practice safe computing. If you have programer who are able to create sophisticated virus/worm such as stuxnet, you really think you can protect yourself? Unless your a programer, those code are basically non-sense foreign language.
