Trained to fight in Europe but we went to Asia. Trained to fight Soviets; we got Iraqis. Where will we fight next & how should we train?

BDUs, ACUs and now OCPs...it's like civilian fashion, it all comes back in style eventually lol. My time in uniform will end with the OCP, I hope we never see the "blend into nothing but a gravel parking lot" pattern again.

Our forces have a lot of talented and smart people. Somewhere in there has to be the next a couple farsighted BG Billy Mitchell types for example.

I have had many conversations with various people about how a war on our home soil would go, and how long it would take the USA to win it. I always say the same thing, which I could be wrong about, but it makes me feel better.

I don't foresee a traditional war on home turf for several reasons:
#1. Every single country knows that our nation spends more on our defense budget than the next 7 combined. Which means that we have a lot of good equipment, and a lot of solid training.
#2. We have a geographically large country, and it's not like you could invade the beaches of California and just march across the nation.
#3. If we were engaged in a war on our own soil, that fight would likely begin to include the Canadians as well. No they may not be a military super-power, but I have a feeling they would become one if we looked like we would be over taken.
#4. The United States populous owns (legally) 357 MILLION firearms. Don't tell me that people with guns would just sit idly by as a military drove past their house, especially with all of the "Dooms Day Preppers" out there.
(a)We would see militias popping up all over the place, that have probably been around for 15 years and with fairly decent training and small arms equipment.
(b) Add that to the best Equipped Military in the world and you have a sever enemy. I know Red Dawn was a movie, but there would be situations like that movie happening all over the place. Maybe not as effective at first, but they would learn to fight that war.
(c) Also, don't forget that there are a lot of combat veterans who help head up these civilian militias, and help teach and train them.
#5. Assuming we were in a very extreme battle on our soil, I can't help but believe that we wouldn't use the FBI, CIA, DIA, US Marshals, City Police, Sheriffs Departments, Homeland Security, Border Patrol, ICE, and any other Federal, State, and local law enforcement organization to win the fight.
#6. I have heard it said that the world has not seen America Angry since WWII. When we are annoyed we will drop thousands of bombs on you, when we are pissed we will drop 2. Clearly we wouldn't drop those on our own soil, but we could break their will by taking out their homes.

I honestly do not think that we would ever have an issue protecting home plate.

Well thought out answer and good points in its defense. However, there are some possible breakdowns : First, we have to consider two scenarios; A) being a foreign conflict with a major power such as the Russian Federation, North Korea, or China that resulted in a retaliatory strike/invasion...B) being a circumstance arising from economic, sociopolitical or environmental stresses that left us vulnerable to invasion, or worse...civil war. Most likely, "A" would lead to a draw...our reduced manpower and technical readiness could lead to a much more costly/lengthy war than planned, but we would ultimately 'out-money' the enemy. Scenario "B", to my mind, is the more likely, and the most threatening as it occurs in the wake of severe breakdowns in all of the factors you mention above.

Absolutely, Scenario "B" is far more likely. I have faith, however, that the US Military would not fight against US citizens.

I foresee a civil war starting over something stupid, like the Cliven Bundy situation. Assuming that situation escalates into a firefight, you would have tremendous Federal support for the BLM. However, I think you would see hundreds of thousands of civilians who would support the resistance.

I have a feeling, that a group of people in the Armed Forces, would openly join the resistance by taking off their uniforms going AWOL and fighting the BLM which would lead to a bunch of other military members doing the same thing. The Government would deploy active military components, and then some of those components would not fight the people and instead would fight the government utilizing their military equipment.

Then it's all about whomever can maintain that fighting for long enough. It would be military commander, vs military commander using US military equipment on both sides, with the added "benefit" of citizen militias on one side. I don't think that the other side would garnish any combat support from the citizens.

Man... I should turn this into a novel, it would be about as believable. :)

I hereby claim rights to this general story line, so that someday when I'm ambitious enough, I can make millions.

HOWEVER, I just thought of this, would any of our Allies come over to squash a civil war? That is what "the people" in this scenario would have to worry about.

When you write the novel, include me in a "cameo" appearance...as some cynical, passed over clot managing the supply of paperclips a-la- Captain Edmund Blackadder :)
