I was looking into my options on other MOSs in the Army and I came across 12P. Sounds like a great MOS, but I'd like to hear from the RP community to see if there is a 12P here/anyone that works with them. Thanks for the help.

I just signed up to Rallypoint and did a search on Prime Power. Yours was one of the first to come up. Well, you will get great training and experience that will translate to a great-paying job in the civilian world... but since SGT is the lowest rank in the MOS, you're pretty much an E5 Private. You will do (not supervise) details. That said, the average age in this MOS is older than any I have come across. The other Soldiers are generally easy to get along with. I have been in this MOS for 9 months and have been on two TDY missions. I get to have my hands on the equipment on a regular basis. It was a good choice for me.

There isn't much info on this MOS out there. I am glad to come across as little or as much as I can get. Thank you all you for your input. That being said, how does this job translate into the civilian sektor? What specific job title will one hold in the civilian employment side? How much would one expect to be paid on the civilian side? On the Army side of things, what specifically do I expect to be doing on a daily basis (coming in as E5)? How are the promotion opportunities? What school opportunities do I get? Can I shoot for an Electrical Engineering degree while serving under mos 12p? How long are the deployments? After installing generators and bringing power to the unit (on deployment), do you stay there for the rest of the deployment and if so, what do you do daily? I know this is a mouth full but I highly appreciate any input.

SGT John Nelson, thank you very much for your response! I have a few more questions. How different is 12P from 12R and 12Q? Do they perform completely different tasks or do they sometimes end up performing same tasks? From what I understand all 12 enlisted Engineering Corps, except the Geospatial guys compete for 120A Warrant Officer. This made me curious because the 12 series is so diverse, ranging from plumbers to carpenters and to Prime Power guys. So my question is, are 120A jacks of all trades or if I was to go Warrant from 12P, my focus will be more towards Prime Power Distribution? I guess what I am really trying to ask is what do 120A do? Also, is it next to impossible to get picked up for 120A? From my perspective looking from out-in, seems very competitive. Thank you for taking your time to respond.

I know a little bit about 12P. I considered it prior to commissioning, and have been out to the school house.

Some of the basics:
-Great MOS with great options outside of the Army.
-Be ready to work....the school is academically rigorous, but you will get college hours out it. The work can also be physically demanding
-They do a lot of work both stateside and abroad. You would definitely see things others would not.
-The Engineer Regiment has a proud and storied history and 12Ps are currently writing a lot of pages, from Afghanistan to Hurricane Sandy.

Do you have any questions? I might know some of the answers or know who to ask.

I'm considering dropping a packet for this MOS. I heard there was a really difficult math test prior to dropping a packet. How can I study for this test? Also do you know what duty stations are available for 12P?

I'm interested to hear if you've finished the school and if so, I have many questions if you ever get the time.
