I have finally reached the age where my long distance vision needs help. Do I need to use LHI, or can I walk into a (realtively close) TMC with a civilian prescription in hand?

Purely as a thought though you'd obviously need to check, you might possibly just ask if, being as you're on active, whether any of the VA hospitals near you might conceivably be allowed to provide them for you, just an idea mind you. I'd heard of instances where VA if a local active guard reserve installation allows it might possibly be able to let their facilities help with active guard reserve care. Clearly I don't know for certain of course, however, nothing ventured and all that, you never know you might luck out, I have an addage I like following, you don't ask, you can't get, I hope the thought might be useful, in any event, I'd be most curious as to your thoughts on the idea, or if might actually lead anywhere, honest, many thanks.

If I use tricare at a local place (nearest base is 250 miles from me) how do I go from prescription to APEL inserts? I'm not worried about pro mask inserts; i understand those only get issued when mob'd.
I guess my question goes back to who do I give the lens script to for having the APEL eyepro made

Can't help you on that one brother. Best bet for APELs is to go to a base Optometrist. No idea on any other way to get them.

My biggest concern is how my acute long vision will affect my weapon's qual. I started noticing last year that the 250s and 300s were more difficult to see then I remember. I had not been on a pop-up in 10 years, and my last quals have been on paper targets or EST2000. Far vision is not a factor in those shooting environments. I am hoping to get something in place by August.

Been there, done that (last weekend in fact) with regard to the 250M & 300M targets. Without corrective inserts I wouldn't be able to differentiate those little Ivans on a pop-up range unless the lighting conditions were just amazing. I would suggest talking to your unit administrator and seeing how they direct you, but my guess is, you will have to run this through LHI. Has you unit done an SRP recently?

Last SRP was a couple years back. I was transferred and missed my most recent one; gaining unit will not do one until Sept.
I may just end up making the drive to JBLM

You may have to obtain an eye exam on your dime, but you should be able to order standard military glasses through http://www.med.navy.mil/sites/nostra/order

I thought that site would only work for mob'd or deployed. I will look at it again
