I've always been told that you should ALWAYS have your CAC on you. Can anyone Civilian or Military confiscate your ID (I'm sure MP's have an exception....I could be wrong)

If a civilian tried to take my ID I would inform him/her that it is federal property and that I would do everything within my power to see that he/she would be charged with theft of federal property.

If it is expired and you try to enter military installation and the gate guard identifies it is expired they are supposed to confiscate it, but aside from that it's a sensitive items signed you and no one is allowed to take it from you. For example if your restaurant and they offer military discount they say I need to see your ID to show it to my manager the manager should come to you.

Mine was taken last month, as a reservist, it is a pain to come in on my day off, driving 100 miles, and wasting half a day. Mine had 2 year before it expired.

My retired card wouldn't scan and it was confiscated but I'm wondering why aN unexpired CAC would get confiscated.

If it the CAC is expired and you are trying to use it for ID. DOD personnel can and should confiscate and turn it in to the ID card section.

No, your CAC is the property of the US government (DOD). Only authorized members of the military may take it away from you. That would include military law enforcement.
