This couple was voluntarily traveling to Afghanistan. They are now held by the Taliban. Should they be rescued/ransomed?

Wait, wait, wait.
What in the world were they doing in Afghanistan? They had to sneak over there. I thought that place was off limits to US citizens.
The difference is they went on their own free will over there probably snuck into the country. SGT B was ordered over there to do a job for this country.
If im the POTUS I look into it but Im not giving up nothing to get them back.

I don't think Afghanistan is off limits to US citizens. One of the tourists was Canadian. There may be a travel advisory, but not a ban. A visa may be obtained for travel. Looks like the couple was just there for thrill tourism.

Where have they been the past 10 years? Its a war zone and dislike Americans. What were they doing there? I read the article but I still dont understand why they were in the Stan. SMH

There's a clear difference here - SGT Bergdahl is an active duty soldier, the others are civilians. Like it or not, there's two very different directives. There is no "we shall leave no civilian behind" motto.

It is ironic that the video is surfacing now, right after SGT Bergdahl's release. On a personal note, I have traveled to areas which have a travel advisory (Colombia). If I were taken hostage, pretty sure that I would not expect assistance from the US government.

SPC - and correct you are. Military travels on orders, civilians travel by choice.

Wanted to go hiking to a lake near the Ecuador border. When I arrived in town, the sheriff (local equivalent) told me not to go without a guide and unarmed.

They were there of their own free will. Unless they've lived off in the Canadian tundra with no power or tv for the last 10 or 15 years, it's their stupidity that got them where they are now. The same goes for anyone that decides to go to any uncivilized, third world cesspit for vacation.

If we stop rescuing people who are stupid..... well, we wouldn't be rescuing very many people....
