Random question, but it's been something I've been meaning to ask... I know most guys in my field (IT/InfoSec) do just that as their civilian job... But what do you do as your civilian job?

I know a couple - ones a lawyer, ones a test pilot for NASA and ones a commercial pilot (He's retired now from the Navy but still flies commercial). However I'm not sure how it works for my buddy Paul who's the test pilot on his flight hours - Paul as well has a law degree and did practice for a bit.

As an ARNG pilot myself, I'm one of the few I know that actually has a pilot job in the civilian sector as well. Most of the M-Day aviators in my state are policemen, engineers or sales/customer service reps in the defense industry. Bottom line answer though is, "whatever they want to be." One of the greatest parts I find of being in the ARNG after starting on AD is the depth of skill sets that ARNG Soldiers bring to the unit from their civilian occupations!

Many have GS jobs. Lets you get away with things. Once at the O Club at SJ I was talking to a Major USAFR and he told me the story about being at Ramstein and parking his tanker where some COL did not want it parked. The COL started into him thinking he was in his capacity as an AF Major and he said
hold on, sir, I'm here as a GS-15, I only wear this flight suit because the AF makes me. I'm tired and I'm going to bed. Good night, sir.
