I received an Honorable discharge back in Dec of '08 as an AD2 (E-5) after serving 7 yrs and every now and then I keep getting the itch to check the reserves and possibly apply.

When is it considered not favorable/too late to go into the reserves?

Is the manning for AD over capacity?
How would reserves work for ADs living in AZ?
(I can't find the DD-214 that has my separation code on it)

Reservist CCC here. I suggest you call NOSC Phoenix and ask for their CCC who will have current information on the manning status of AD and know exactly which units in the area need AD. In the reserves a lot of what you get out of it depends on which unit you are assigned to. Some are high speed, up-tempo with great experiences to be had. Other units are NKO warriors. I'm lucky to have been in two fantastic units that got me a great AFG deployment, a ton of exotic passport stamps and even a few days of sea time along the way. Do your research. But I suggest that if you are itching to come back, do it while you are young. There's a lot of people pushing age 60 in the reserves because of the retirement benefits and you want to get your 20 out of the way while your body still works right.

Max age for prior service to rejoin is 40, as far as your rate goes the reserves is was different than AD. I just rejoined this past july, I got out in 2006 as an HT3 and getting back in wasn't an issue. Manning levels for the reserves are different HT on the active side is still pretty locked up where as in the reserves it is undermaned. As far as living in AZ, you will drill @ your closest NOSC, if you have to travel more than 50 miles you will be put up in a hotel and meals taken care of. Drill weekend you'll do admin stuff ie medical, dental, GMT's and anything else to ensure you are deployable. Depending on the unit you get picked up by is where you will do your annual training.

Your best bet is to call or swing into the recruiting station to see what the manning levels are.

You could drill at your closest NOSC, by you would most likely be cross assigned out to a unit that actually has something pertaining to your rate. That way when you go do your AT it would be with your cross assigned unit so it would be a rate based AT. As far as advancement goes, this past cycle who got Frocked in nov 15 AD1 was at 3.03 %. 2 out of 66 eligible advanced ad2-ad1 on the sel res side. So I would definitely look at maybe cross rating to something different if you're looking to advance your career while in the reserves

Unfortunately I'd have to go in as AD3 since it's been over 6 yrs.

Even if you went in as an AD3 I would still suggest re rating, sel res AD3 to AD2 was at 0.00% this past cycle.... So still career suicide if you're looking to climb the ranks. I would definitely look at cross rating to something out. And if you search Navy times, the have the break down percentages for each rate from this past cycle, and it's all separated from sel res, active, and FTS. One question, if you have a bachelors, have you ever thought about going reserve officer maybe? In my opinion that would be a great career move especially if you ever wanted to go active again after that.
