For those not familiar, RallyPoint recently raised the minimum number of Influence Points required to 15,000 before being able to down vote anyone. The purpose is to ensure that people who down vote have a sufficient amount of experience with the community and understand protocol.

I really don't care much if I am voted up or down. Neither changes my opinion. I come here to try and keep myself abreast of the progress, issues and environment our military encompasses. If I disagree with someone then I'll tell them so. If they can present a reasonable explanation of why I should change my mind I'll take it into consideration. I don't come here for points.

As a long time user and one of the senior user admins, I wish I could just remove pointless discussions like this. Why do members get so wrapped up over the points?

I agree. But maybe it's because every time you do anything on the site a message pops up telling you how great you are and how many points you are building. And on the right of my screen is a list of top point getters and how many points they have earned recently and in theur entire life. So while I agree the points should be meaningless, the fact is the site goes out of its way to promote them and encourage people to earn them. So it seems like the site makes a concerted effort to make members aware of and get wrapped up about points.

SGT Ben Keen I'm glad the point was brought up or I wouldn't have known the policy had been changed. It's a great simple improvement. I bet it has quieted down /some/ of the flame wars.

So today I was vote down, I am guessing because he didn't agree with my view or maybe it was because I called him out on another thread, I don't know.. So, I learned that I can't vote him down if I want to, which I admit I did. I read here that I need 15k points because that's the rules, OK. But what about posters being in the top 1% of Overall Influence or top 1% of Knowledge Influence, would that not mean something? Or how about a policy, that if a person votes another down, she/he must post the reason for it, back up their act.

I have only down voted someone once. When I did so I followed up with the reason; the clarification of misunderstanding; the correction; and instructions on how to implement the correct info
