I am approaching year 2 in my 6 year contract for the National Guard. I'm going through a separation & want to move back to my home state, New York. I'm currently in the Michigan NG & my contract has a $12,500 bonus attached to it along with my kicker & TA. From what I understand this is all tied to my state (& even worse, position in my current unit - I can't even leave the S2 within my unit until my contract is up without losing my bonus).

Has anyone been successful in transferring states in the Guard & the new state matching your old states incentives? I can't afford to pay back what I've already received so far from my bonus.

Speak to a recruiter. GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING if they ok transfer w/o loss of bonus!
I had to pay back $15,000 because I became an officer 5 months too soon from an SGT(P)
Just be careful and read paragraph "d" meaning, read the ENTIRE contract yourself. Don't just listen to what someone is telling you. My 2 cents. Good luck!

I was told there would be no recoupment, but it was not in the contract so it was on me for not reading. That is why I advised to read it all.

SFC (Join to see) - I appreciate it! Thank you! I have to go in for MRE this Sunday depending on who is there, I'll address my wishes then & see what they say.

The ARNG uses a system called GIMS to track incentives nationwide. Your incentive will go with you provided that you meet all the eligibility criteria specified in your contract. It'll either be skill based or vacancy based-> sound like you are vacancy based. If you fill a similar type vacancy in the new State you should be fine. Either way there is an exception to policy route that can waive the termination of your contract. New York is a big state guard wise and should have plenty of force structure to support whatever skill you are. Kicker should be the same story. TA is universal and shouldn't cause an issue. unless it is State TA and Michigan wants to hold you to a service obligation.

Sir, I ran into a problem with my bonus straight out of AIT because my initial orders were cut for rear d but when I got to my unit I was put in the S2 because my unit was never actually deployed. Due to this (so says my 1SG) I had become ineligible for my bonus so they had to rewrite my contract in order to show that I should still be receiving it. Does this make sense? I'm a 35F, intelligence analyst, there's typically always need for us so I don't think it'd be a problem finding a slot in upstate NY.

Yes, it probably wasn't a rewrite of the bonus but an exception to policy or a rewrite of the supporting documentation that went into your bonus. There is a big difference between "Command Directed" and "Voluntary" moves. Many many -many- times the Battalion will move a Soldier (like in your case) and wrongly label the transfer as voluntary ... in that instance you've lost your bonus because you 'voluntarily left the critical vacancy which you were incentivized to stay in'. The exception to policy process fixes that, a possible fix is an amendment to your transfer order labeling it as command directed.

35F is a great field. Recommend you contact a recruiter in NY and have them perform a "vacancy search in GIMS for 35F", and look for an incentivized position that you could fill. The recruiter will know it is incentivized if it has a Tier 1-6 score on it. (Tier 7 is not incentivized)

MAJ (Join to see) - perfect! Lots of good knowledge & advice, thank you!! Is GIMS specific to each state, i.e. Can MI only see MI & NY only see NY or can they view vacancies outside of their home state?

No problem, GIMS is specific to the State so it'll have to be a person with NY's user access to search for the vacancies. I shoulda said that in the line "recommend you contact a recruiter in NY." NY is large enough hat they probably have a dedicated IST guy at the Joint Force Headquarters that could help walk you through the process. You'll have to play a telephone game of trying to find who that is.

Don't worry about this get the number to a interstate coordinator and let he/she handle the rest also make sure you explain your situation. I've had to IST and it was hassle free.
