SFC Williams, for me its serving this country like others have before me. I wanted to continue our tradition of being a powerful military to protect us and those we support around the world. I always knew I would serve in one of the branches someday...just didn't know for how long or which one when I was 12 yrs old.

Sir, I really wish that I can get the same answer from the future Soldiers I meet out here in recruiting. It's very rare for someone to have the actual desire to serve the nation. I understand that there are many reasons why someone would want to serve, but I do hope that what you said is one of them.

SFC Williams, they are hard to seek out for sure, especially on the west coast. I had a rough time in Portland BN, Eugene, CO (6H1K). So many were not interested or just couldn't pass the ASVAB to get in. I had my few and a share of DEP losses too. We worked late at night and 6-7 days a week. My GAs and SAs would change their minds or not score that high at MEPs. I had a few SBs that turned into SAs. What I did was try to build the 11S pool so that I could be successful the next year. Most wanted to serve to get out of town. It's a shame that most didn't care to serve or thought it would be an option for them ever. How is USAREC these days?

The same Sir. You pretty summed it all up for me. Some changes in the enlistment policies are making it harder for some to get in, i.e. the new tattoo policy.

We had the same in 2001-2004. I had to take pics of prospects in the Class B shirt so that MEPs could see that the tattoos were not shown. I also had to describe and document them on a form. I had one kid who couldn't get in for a tattoo that was a dot on his hand. Yes, the size of a pen tip mark. He didn't want a tattoo but decided by pressure just to have a small dot. MEPs saw it and DQd him.

I would have to say that of my favorite things about being in the service is that I get to wear the uniform. I have been in the Army for a very long time and while there have been days that have not been great, there is no greater feeling that being able to wear the uniform of your Nation.

I totally agree MSG. There are many out there who wish to serve and wear the uniform but can't due to some reason. It really is a great feeling to be part of the few that can wear it.

As a former soldier I echo Capt Christian D. Orr's comments.
My favorite things about military service include the camaraderie, chance to go to places I never would have dreamed or nightmared] not sure if that is a word] of going to, first class training in several schools, and the chance to fire many cool weapons and work with some interesting and frequently useful equipment.
