588 for Jan 2016 is pretty low considering there are almost 350 Soldiers on the list for E5. With only less than 100 getting picked up the points shouldn't shoot up to 798 the next few months. I got picked up for E5 with 640 points but that was back in 2004 under the old point system. Focus on the points that you can control for example APFT, Weapons and civilian education. Your biggest issue will be going for E6. I have seen a lot of SGT's get RCP'd as 92F because they couldn't get picked up for E6. So if you do have an opportunity to reclass I highly recommend it so you can set yourself up better for the long term.

Back in the day when I was a SPC on active duty the points for 77F were in the 700's. (77F is what it was before 92F)
