I heard of a young male getting 110 push ups and sit ups and running close to 11:30 two mile. I don't remember what that was on the extended scale.

The 11:30 is quick, but not fast. I ran with quite a few guys back in the 80s and we were all sub 11s or high 10s. That's just being in shape. We had 2 guys who were rated #1 and #2 in USAEUR in cross-country and both ran upper 8s. Very impressive ... but both were poor in push-ups and sit-ups. Once saw a young lady crank out 135 sit-ups and a huge man (who looked chubby) knock out 140 GOOD push-ups. I'm sure we have several service members across our services who can put all of these numbers to shame. Amazing what great athletes with great desire can accomplish. Doesn't matter if from days gone by or today, there are a lot of men and women with the drive to excel.

All god points SSG Porter. PT tests are merely one of the measuring posts the Army uses to say that a Soldier is "in shape" but is not indicative of an individual's combat capabilities. I would argue that many of our Soldiers, although Soldiers first, are also great athletes in their own right. And at 55, my sprinting for anything is well in my past.

My team leader in Okinawa made the Guinness book of world records for the most sit ups in one minute. I personally did not see it happen. But a copy of his achievement was posted in the Unit Bay. Located at 1st Bn 1st SFG(A).

Here's a good ole basic training story. A guy in my platoon ran track in HS and college. The BN CSM called him out and offered some friendly competition. The PVT ran the initial 2 mile in 10 flat and was a little disappointed. CSM ran it with us and had 9:50. By the end of BCT, he improved (motivated with beating the CSM) to a 9:30. The CSM ran the end of cycle test and got 9 flat. Life lesson: Don't mess with CSMs!
