I am in the Air Force Reserves and a unit is having a Deserving Airman Commissioning board and I don't know anyone that has commissioned this way. Just curious if anyone had any input or experience with the process. Is it just a paper board? Does it vary by unit?

I am in the process now. So far, it has been paperwork, then a meeting of leadership, sometimes they may interview, but rarely. Mostly it is who deserves the opportunity. I am competing with about 20 others, all with degrees, all experienced, so it can be a luck of the draw. Your unit or wing should have sent out a package request for those interested, stating what all was required. I had to get an age waiver, that no one in my wing would sign, but their boss did. So make sure to take the time, do it right, and best of luck too you.

I'm not sure if it is a standard process across the board, but I had a friend who got selected for this program and is finally going to OTS soon.
She had to board with the unit that she was applying for which consisted of the Command Chief and officers. What I can say is be prepared and ready to answer questions. I would also recommend doing "mock" boards with your
Peers, Shirt, Chief and Commander since they have a plethora of knowledge to share with you. Good luck!
